This exhibition traces the history of Latinx students, faculty and staff at Duke University from the early 1900s to the present moment. Using the University Archives and oral histories, the curators for the first time publicly explore the complex story of Latinx presence at Duke. Dr. Cecilia Márquez’s Latinx Social Movements course and Professor Joan Munné’s Spanish for Heritage Learners course completed archival research and oral histories in the spring of 2021 to create an exhibition that communicates this complex history. The exhibit shares a multifaceted history of the Latinx experience including challenges, inequities and prejudices, and also celebrates the Latinx community, tells human stories and shares accomplishments.
