Placement Guidelines

Welcome to the Italian Language Program (ILP).
Please find the statement that best describes your previous language study and enroll in the associated course. If you have taken either the SAT II or the AP exam in Italian please locate your score and enroll in the indicated course.

  1. I have never studied Italian before. —› Please enroll in Italian 001
  2. I have studied another Romance language (French, Portuguese, Romanian or Spanish) for 3 or more years and intend to devote considerable effort to my study of Italian at Duke. —› Please enroll in Italian 014 or Italian 021
  3. I have prior knowledge of Italian but have not taken the SAT II or AP exam in Italian. —› Please contact the director of the ILP (fellin@duke.edu ) or the assistant director (casa@duke.edu) to schedule a placement exam.
  4. I received a score of at least 660 on the SAT II, a 4 in AP Italian Language or a 4 or 5 in AP Italian Literature but am not confident about enrolling in a literature course. —› Please contact the director of the ILP (fellin@duke.edu ) or the assistant director (casa@duke.edu) to discuss your placement.
  5. I am requesting transfer credit for Italian Language course work. —› Please see: guidelines for Italian language transfer credit
