The Foreign Language Requirement at Duke

The Foreign Language Requirement at Duke (FL requirement) states that all students must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language at the intermediate or advanced level. Specifically, you must complete one of the following, depending on your level of proficiency in the language you choose to study at Duke:

  1. If you enter language study at Duke at the intermediate level or above:
    The successful completion of a 100-level course that carries the FL designation. Therefore, if you place into the first semester of the intermediate level, you will need to take at least three full courses in the same language. If you place into the second semester of the intermediate level, you will need to take at least two full courses in the same language. And if you place into the 100-level, you will need to take at least one full course.
  2. If you begin language study at Duke in an elementary language course:
    The successful completion of three (3) full courses in the same language that carry the FL designation.

How can I complete the Foreign Language Requirement in Italian ?

  1. No prior knowledge of Italian:

  2. With previous study of Italian (placement guidelines) :
    1st course 2nd course 3rd course

  3. Students entering with advanced placement in Italian 100

    One course at the 100 level completes the language requirement

    You can choose from a wide array of courses in Italian at the 100 level, including literature, film, history and cultural studies. Courses numbered 100 and above may allow you to complete requirements in several areas of knowledge and competencies and will count toward a Major or Minor in Italian

Transfer

Transfer of language courses from study abroad
To fulfill the FL requirement, courses taken abroad must be taken in a Duke- administered or Duke-approved program. To qualify for approval, language courses must be equivalent to the courses offered by the Italian Language Program at Duke. See: guidelines for Italian Language transfer credit and Study Abroad
